About Openguessr
OpenGuessr is an online geography gaming platform that tests users' knowledge through interactive, location-based gameplay. Operating within the gaming and entertainment space, the platform attracts a global audience, with the majority of its desktop traffic coming from the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland, and Canada. Built as a single-page application (SPA), OpenGuessr provides a seamless player experience, allowing users to move between gameplay and results without any page reloads. As the platform scaled, the publisher looked for ways to optimise ad performance while strictly maintaining its clean, uninterrupted interface.
The Challenge
Before partnering with Publift, OpenGuessr monetised with a different partner using a very limited ad setup. The publisher’s primary goal was to minimise the impact of advertising on the gameplay experience. However, the site’s SPA architecture introduced unique technical hurdles, specifically around ad rendering and reload behaviors during page transitions and breakpoint changes.
Additionally, while their existing setup successfully handled iframe monetisation, the publisher was seeking a higher level of responsive, proactive technical support. They needed a partner equipped not only to maintain complex setups, but to actively collaborate on improving page transition behaviors and carefully fine-tuning the integration to meet their exacting standards.
The Approach
Publift worked closely with the OpenGuessr team to build a tailored monetisation strategy that respected the website’s technical structure and fierce commitment to UX.
Rather than increasing ad density, Publift focused on working smarter with the existing limited ad setup:
- Custom Technical Implementations: Publift successfully executed custom code changes to support the Funding Choices (BYO CMP) integration.
- Optimising the SPA Environment: The team improved ad loading behaviors during breakpoint changes and optimized iframe ad serving, directly resolving the platform's previous rendering issues.
- Strengthening Demand: To drive revenue without adding intrusive formats, Publift connected the site to 20 SSPs and enabled Intowow demand, vastly maximising auction competition and ensuring a stronger quality of demand.
Throughout the onboarding process, implementation behavior was closely monitored to guarantee that revenue improvements did not come at the cost of the player experience.
The Results
Following the implementation, OpenGuessr achieved a 46% revenue uplift and a 67% RPM uplift* compared to their previous setup.
Despite maintaining their highly limited ad strategy and avoiding new ad formats entirely, the site saw significant monetisation gains through Publift's improved auction competition and technical optimizations. The strategic fixes also resolved prior breakpoint loading and Funding Choices compatibility issues, ultimately delivering a smoother user experience and a highly efficient monetisation stack.
